A Month of Cultural Learning Underway

September 15th – October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month. During this time we honor the cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans, Latinos/Latinas, and Latinx-identifying people in our society. At the Tom Maas Clubhouse, we are celebrating by exploring and honoring contributions by Hispanic artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera to activists such as Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. We are  diving into Hispanic culture by exploring different cuisines, music and dance, art, and lots more.

Our members will also get a chance to take a virtual tour through La Casa Azul, also known as The Frida Kahlo Museum. It was the home of Kahlo and fellow artist Diego Rivera. It is said to have been the epicenter of intellectual and Avant-Garde activity, where local and international figures would gather to exchange discourse. We will also explore virtual exhibits at the Smithsonian National Museum of American Latino.

Using the arts and our own creativity, we decorated the main entry with flags from all the Spanish speaking countries from around the world. We also created a bulletin board that proudly features Hispanic artists, poets, writers, inventors, activists, politicians, scientists, and athletes.
