Recently, our Santa Maria Railroad Club teen leadership program, Keystone, visited the Paso Robles Housing Authority to do a Career Preparation Workshop with fellow teens in Paso Robles. Their two and a half hour workshop focused on the different roles of project management through an immersive hands-on activity group challenge.
Each team was challenged to design a themed hotel, complete with a small scale prototype using recycled materials as well as a marketing campaign that included a three-minute pitch presentation and marketing materials such as posters and brochures. Team members assumed various roles including, project manager, Lead Design/Architect, Construction Manager, Marketing Manager, and a Procurement Manager.
Each team with limited funding needed to “purchase” materials for their project with the goal of using as little funds as possible. As the project progressed, teens soon learned about a restocking fee and quickly pivoted towards a bartering system for various materials amongst the teams.
At the end of the challenge, teams were asked to vote for hotels with the best aesthetic, best marketing, most creative, and best overall. Teens had a great afternoon of fun all while learning about potential careers in project management!
