Winter Basketball League Ends a Great Season

After a one year hiatus, due to Covid-19 safety precautions, Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast held its much loved annual youth basketball league with exceptional participation among local kids. With registration starting in September and practices and games beginning in October, the annual league provided months of exercise, sportsmanship, skills development and friendship for hundreds of girls and boys in the community.

Thanks to the commitment of many volunteer coaches, over 650 kids played on 88 different teams over the season. Practices and games were held weekly weekly at the Railroad Clubhouse gym, the Lakeview Junior High Gym, or the Orcutt Junior High Gym.  Players in grades Kinder- 8th, got to participate in a team sport–many, for the first time in two years.

The play offs for league championship were held on February 12th and the championship teams are as follows:

4th grade boys division– the Bulldogs defeated the Aggies.

5th/6th girls division–Notre Dame beat Gonzaga.

5th/6th boys division– the Sun Devils beat Georgetown

7th/8th boys division– Cal defeated the Wizards.

Team parent, Wendy Thies Sell, summed up the experience saying, “After not playing for a year due to the pandemic, our daughter, Sonnet, was eager to get back on the basketball court this year. We are grateful to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mid Central Coast for organizing a successful and safe season for all the youth in our area who love playing basketball. We especially appreciate the coaches who stepped up during a challenging time. Our wonderful Coach Jenn made sure that each practice or game was a time to learn, to work as a team, and most importantly, to have fun. We thank her for volunteering to coach both a girl’s AND a boy’s team this year! Thanks to the Boys & Girls Club, our daughter grew as an athlete, made friends, and had fun!”

Sonnet played on the 5th/6th grade girls team, “Gonzaga.”

We look forward to bringing more league sports to our service area including a Flag Football league taking sign ups now and a possible Summer Basketball league. For details on all of our sports and healthy lifestyles programs contact Ernie Cuevas.
