The theme for Week 6 of Summer camp was Nature week. Thanks to our wonderful, kind-hearted donors, Jane and Steve Sinton, the Shandon Club was able to take a trip to Pismo Beach on the 14th of July! Groups rotated from visiting the nearby shops, walking on the pear, and playing on the sand while collecting seashells. As lunch approached, Members alongside the Staff gathered at the pear restrooms to wash hands and headed to our spot on the sand. Members as well as Staff enjoyed their delicious lunches from home and treats that were bought. Once lunch was over, Staff led everyone to the bus to return back to the clubhouse. A huge Thank You to our donors who made this unforgettable day possible for the Shandon Club.
Throughout that week, art consisted of painting rocks, creating flowers & flowerpots, trees, and leaf bugs using cardboard with yarn, oil pastels, and paper plates. TK/K planted flower seeds in small pots with Mrs. Angela, and for origami, a dragonfly, tree, tulip, and lily were made. During STEM, Members made paper windmills and dissected gel-like animals using science kits. During cooking class, dirt cups were made using chocolate pudding, Oreos, and gummy worms and Youth absolutely devoured them! TK/K sensory bins were forest and arctic themed and the weekly favorite team building activity was blind polygon. Their favorite snack that week was strawberries in a cup with cool whip.
Ms. Carina had the brilliant idea to raise caterpillars in the club and allow our Members to watch them transform into beautiful butterflies. A few weeks prior to nature week, Ms. Carina introduced the caterpillars to the kids and as they reached nature week, Ms. Itzel taught them more about the butterflies’ life cycle during STEM and released the butterflies that same week.
