Railroad Clubhouse Creates Homemade Lava Lamps

Our young scientists at the Railroad Clubhouse in Santa Maria had a blast exploring hands-on STEM activities in June!

Members created their own lava lamps, choosing their favorite colors while learning how different ingredients interact to create the floating “lava” effect. They discovered the science behind density and chemical reactions through experimentation. They also mixed up their own batches of homemade playdough, carefully combining ingredients and using problem-solving skills to troubleshoot the mixture until it reached the perfect consistency.

This activity encouraged teamwork, creativity, and perseverance while introducing basic scientific concepts in a fun and engaging way.
