Days of Advocacy in Sacramento

We had the opportunity to take some of our teens to the California capital to do some advocacy work. We advocated to our congresspeople to fund and increase out of school time programs such as ELOP and ASES. On the first day of the event, all the teens learned about the different levels of advocacy and worked on their elevator pitch. They had a chance to practice what they planned to say to the representatives we would be meeting the following day. They also had an opportunity to listen to a Career Panel, with five professionals in different career fields. The panelists spoke about what their jobs entail and their involvement in advocacy as well as how teens can get involved in advocacy work.

The following day, we met with representatives from the offices of Gregg Hart and Monique Limon, where we spoke to them about the importance of after school programs and how our clubs have affected members and the community at large. Later that day, we were able to attend the 2025 CA Youth of the Year celebration where Elda, from BGC San Francisco was awarded the winner. This fall, she heads to Boston University on a full scholarship to study Behavioral Biology.  Elda will represent our state at the National level for Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year competition.
