Within the first three weeks of summer camp the Shandon Members have soaked up all the fun there is to our activities. Members have created wonderful art with Mrs. Angela, tk/k sensory play and Summer Brain Gain are ran by Ms. Czarina, STEM and origami are led by Ms. Itzel, and Ms. Shyleen is in charge of team building games as well as daily scavenger hunts.
The first week’s theme was “Aloha Summer”. On day one, Staff welcomed Members with Hawaiian leis and tropical music to suit the vibe! During art, Members painted wooden Hawaiian kits, paper plate Tamatoa from Moana, designing hair clips/ sunglasses, a vespa scooter, and a Hawaiian sunset. Origami consisted of making a kusudama flower, crab, sunglasses, goldfish, and pineapple. For STEM members made kinetic sand, studied the human body anatomy, and made volcanos. During cooking class that week they made and enjoyed mango sago. Tk/k’s sensory play consisted of tide pools and seashell explorations, and everyone’s top team building game of the week was Granny Pants. That Friday, the Club hosted a Luau in honor of the week’s theme and Members played Limbo, musical chairs, and enjoyed Hawaiian roll sandwiches with a side of fruit punch made by Ms. Carina.
Week two’s theme was Under The Sea. For art Youth designed mermaid tails, neon jellyfish, Nemo, seahorses, and a whale cup. During origami, a stingray, jellyfish, starfish, and squid were made. For STEM, Members made water slime, elephant toothpaste, and learned about whale blubber. Starfish sandwiches alongside blueberry jello with a gummy shark were exquisitely made during cooking class. Tk/k’s sensory play bins had water slime and water beads and the weekly favorite team building game was hungry hippos.
Week three’s theme was Into The Wild. A big thank you to Traveling Zoofari for paying the Shandon Club a wild visit. Members were able to see and learn about dessert cockroaches, “Baja” the 6 yr-old tortoise and “Tamby” the 2 yr-old python. Some art crafts created this week were a lion silhouette sunset, paper bag hippo, a crocodile swimming in a stream, and a paper plate zebra mask. During origami, a lion, zebra, crocodile, monkey, and tiger were folded. For STEM, members dissected fake frogs/fish, salt painted, and learned about dinosaur eggs. During cooking class, Members devoured animal cracker parfaits that had bananas, vanilla or chocolate pudding, and animal crackers. Tk/k sensory play bins consisted of an African safari and a rainforest, and noodle hockey/noodle relay were voted weekly favorites for team building games.
Off-campus trips to the Shandon market, Library, and Community Park are tons of fun and outdoor waterplay as well as occasional Paradise Ice visits are both a huge success when it comes to having a summer blast!
