We were thrilled to be part of the 2nd annual Calles Vivas! Open Streets celebration in Santa Maria. Open Streets is an international movement with a common goal of promoting community wellness by creating safe and temporary car-free spaces on streets and roads, opening them up as a public park for a day. In Santa Maria, this meant closing down a mile of West Main Street for a beautiful Sunday.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast joined over 100 other organizations to provide healthy activities, share information about our programs and say hi to the thousands of community members who walked by. It was a glorious day!
We celebrated our fitness and healthy lifestyles programs with an opportunity for kids to play a basketball activity or do some H.I.I.T workouts. Our Keystone Teen Leadership group passed out information and played games to encourage water conservation and staying safe in extreme heat. They even had community members share their own creative ideas for how to use less water! Our Youth Development Professionals lead a great mask-making activity for kids just in time for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos while our marketing team passed out information and answered questions about all of our afterschool and out of school programs and services.
Even Santa Maria, Alice Patino, along with many of our current Club Members stopped by our booths to show their support!
