The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast is excited to announce an important partnership with Creston Elementary School to provide top notch after school programming at the school facility beginning January 5th. Creston is a very small community about 10 miles outside of Atascadero–far enough away from resources and services to make afterschool care difficult for parents to access. Realizing children and families in this area needed the help that the nationally recognized, high quality education programs the Boys & Girls Clubs provide, discussions with school administration quickly led to this important partnership. Creston Elementary School is a K-5th school serving approximately 60 children across all grade levels. Afterschool care is now available to all enrolled students and will be led by Club Director, Yasmin Rodriguez, and Area Director, Mina Donkor, who oversees operations for Clubs in Atascadero, Shandon and Paso Robles. Kindergartners arrive at 12:30 and grades 1-5 arrive at 2:45 and can stay until parents pick up by 6 pm.
School administrators are working hand in hand with Boys & Girls Clubs staff to tailor programming to best meet needs of as many of the students as possible. The school is working with Boys & Girls Club Staff to ensure that the highly effective Power Hour ™ will allow students to focus on math skill-building. Power Hour is a national program that all Boys & Girls Clubs use every day–the first hour after arriving at the Club, Members spend an hour with Club staff doing homework, reading, planning objectives, and making the transition from school work to extra-curricular activities. In addition, STEAM activities, sports, physical fitness, fine art, and nutrition programs will be offered every day as is done at all Clubs on the Central Coast.
must! charities, the philanthropic organization focused on supporting programs and services that benefit the greatest needs in Northern San Luis Obispo County, was approached to help fund the Club programs in Creston and was immediately inspired to help. Already supporting Club programming in Shandon–a community with similar needs as those in Creston–must! already knows how successful their funding can be when in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast.
